Lesson 4 of 7

Content Freshness and the Update Strategy

Publishing new content is only half the job. For many topics - software reviews, statistics, how-to guides for tools that change, and anything involving prices, laws or regulations - existing content decays. A guide that was accurate two years ago may now rank for a query and give wrong information, which damages both user trust and your site's E-E-A-T signals.

Google gives ranking boosts to freshly updated content for queries where freshness matters. "Best CRM software 2026" rewards pages that have been updated recently and say so with a visible date. AI tools also factor recency into citation decisions - a page last updated in 2022 is less likely to be cited for a fast-moving topic than an equivalent page updated this quarter.

A practical update strategy: audit your top-ranking pages every six months. Update statistics, replace outdated tool recommendations, add any new sub-questions that have emerged in "People Also Ask," and change the visible date. This is one of the highest-ROI SEO activities available - you are improving existing rankings rather than starting from zero with new content.
