Lesson 1 of 3

Google Business Profile

() is the free listing that appears when someone searches for a business by name or searches for a type of business near them, for example "coffee shops near me." It shows your address, phone number, opening hours, photos, reviews and more, directly in Google Search and Maps.

Claiming and fully completing your is the single most important step in local SEO. Businesses with complete, accurate profiles appear more often in local search results and the "" (the map with three business listings that appears near the top of many local searches).

Keep your profile updated: add photos regularly, post updates about offers or events, respond to every review (positive and negative), and make sure your name, address and phone number are exactly consistent with what appears on your website and everywhere else online.

data now feeds directly into Google’s for local searches, letting the AI summarize your category, service attributes, and review themes into a direct answer instead of a list of links. Keep this in proportion, though: currently trigger on only around 7 percent of direct local queries like "plumber near me," so the traditional and standard ranking factors remain the main battleground for most local businesses today.

A newer, still-early layer worth watching is agentic booking, where an AI agent compares options and books or calls a business directly on a customer’s behalf. A business with inconsistent listings, missing structured data, or an unanswered phone line risks being skipped by an agent entirely, before a customer ever sees it as an option. Clean, consistent, structured business information is the low-risk way to prepare for this regardless of how quickly it grows.
