How to Add Alt Text to Images on WordPress
Alt text is a short description attached to an image. Search engines cannot see pictures the way people do, so alt text tells them what the image shows. It also lets screen readers describe the image to visually impaired visitors.
The fix on WordPress
Click the image in the Media Library or block editor and fill in the "Alt Text" field in the sidebar.
Builder menus change over time. If a label looks different, look for the closest option and check WordPress's help centre.
Why this matters
Google cannot "see" images the way people do - alt text is how it understands what is in the picture. It also helps visually impaired visitors using screen readers.
How to check it worked
- Right-click an image, choose Inspect, and look for an alt attribute with a meaningful description.
- Run the free Site Check, which reports how many images on the page are missing alt text.
Common questions
How long should alt text be?
A short, specific description, usually under about 125 characters. Describe what the image shows and skip phrases like "image of".
Do decorative images need alt text?
Purely decorative images can have an empty alt attribute so screen readers skip them. Anything that carries information should be described.
